Rack Mount Power Supplies for Data Centres

Rack mount power supplies for data centres

MEAN WELL’S range of rack mount power supplies boast a range of useful features, which makes them ideal for use in data centres.

When selecting a rack mount power supply for use in a data centre you want both reliability and functionality that can forewarn you of any problems that could result in a server going down.

MEAN WELL rack mount power supply is based on a modular design.

1U low profile racks are available that will accommodate either 3, or 5 power supply units. The power supply units themselves all have a current sharing feature, so that they can be connected in parallel.

All of MEAN WELL’s rack mount power supplies are ‘hot swappable’, so you don’t need to power down to swap out a power supply that may have failed and all models have a remote ON/OFF function. This makes them highly desirable for use in data centres.

There are also a number of other features available on various different models.

MEAN WELL RCP-1000 Rack Mount Power System

MEAN WELL RCP-1000

Within the RCP-1000 series there are three different voltage output options available:

Model

Power Output

MEAN WELL RCP-1000-12

12V / 60A

MEAN WELL RCP-1000-24

24V / 40A

MEAN WELL RCP 1000-48

48V / 21A

The 1U low profile rack is available as a separate item under part number RCP-1U.

MEAN WEL RCP-1U

Each rack can hold up to 3 MEAN WELL RCP-1000 rack mount power supplies. Using the current sharing function, you can connect these up in parallel to deliver up to 3000 Watts of power.

The RCP-1000 power supply units have a 5V / 0.3A auxiliary power output, which is very useful for powering cooling fans. As we know, servers do not like running hot, so this is a very useful feature for a power supply that is to be used in a data centre.

There are also two output alarm signals. One for DC OK and one for AC OK. These can be used to give a warning of a failure on either the AC or DC side.

The output voltage can be trimmed manually. The following table shows the adjustment range, depending on the output voltage of the power supply unit:

Power Supply Unit

Voltage Adjust Range (Manual)

Voltage Adjustment Range (Remote)

RCP-1000-12

11.6 ~ 12.4V

90 ~ 110% of nominal output voltage

RCP-1000-24

23.2 ~ 24.8V

RCP-1000-48

46.3 ~ 49.7V

Remote control of the voltage output is achieved by applying external resistance across the appropriate control terminals on the power supply.  This can be applied through the RCP-MU remote control and monitoring unit.

Mean Well RCP-MU

This remote control enables you to monitor the output voltage of the power supplies, the current draw and temperature level. Alarm signals can be set to warn of a power supply operating outside of expected parameters, giving an early indication that something could be wrong.

MEAN WELL RCP-1600 Rack Mount Power System

Mean Well RCP-1600

The RCP-1600 series differs a little from the RCP-1000 in two ways.

Apart from its higher power output, which are detailed in the following table, the 1U rack accepts 5 power supply units instead of 3, giving you a much higher power density from a single rack. Plus both the output voltage and output current can be remotely adjusted.

Model

Power Output

MEAN WELL RCP-1600-12

12V / 125A

MEAN WELL RCP-1600-12

24V / 67A

MEAN WELL RCP-1600-48

48V / 33.5A

The rack is ordered as a separate item under part# RHP-1U.

Mean Well RHP-1U

Holding 5 power supplies means that you have up to a whopping 8000 watts available should you opt to use the current sharing function to connect all 5 power supply units in parallel.

With the RCP-1600 rack power supply system you get 3 alarm signals: DC OK, AC OK and Temperature alarm.

There is a wider range of output voltage adjustment available as well, which is shown in the following table:

Power Supply Unit

Manual VDC Adjust Range

Manual VDC Adjust Range

Remote Current Adjust Range

RCP-1600-12

11.5 ~ 15V

40~125% of the nominal voltage 20~100% of the rated current

RCP-1600-24

23.5 ~ 30V

RCP-1600-48

47.5 ~ 58.8V

With the RCP-1600 series remote adjustment of the voltage and current output is achieved by applying an external voltage to the relevant control terminals.

The auxiliary output can also deliver either 5V @ 0.3A, or 12V @ 0.8A.

Unlike the RCP-1000, there is no remote control unit available for the RCP-1600 power supplies. However, the fact that is uses external voltage for remote operations enables integration into many automation control systems.

MEAN WELL RCP-2000 Rack Mount Power System

The RCP-2000 series power supplies share many of the features and functions found on both the RCP-1000 and RCP-1600 mentioned above.

MEAN WELL RCP-2000-12

12V / 100A

MEAN WELL RCP-2000-24

24V / 80A

MEAN WELL RCP-2000-48

48V / 42A

The RKP-1U mounting rack is ordered separately and can house up to 3 RCP-2000 power supplies.

MEAN WELL RKP-1U

Using the current sharing function, you enjoy a power output of up to 8000 Watts per rack.

The RCP-2000 boasts a wide range of useful functions, which makes it perfect for use in data centres:

  • Auxiliary power output: 5V @ 0.3A / 12V @ 0.8A
  • Remote adjustment of output voltage.
  • DC OK Signal
  • AC OK Signal
  • Over Temperature Warning
  • Fan Fail Signal

As with the RCP-1600, remote adjustment of the output current is achieved by applying an external voltage to the relevant control terminals on the power supply.

Voltage Adjus Range (Manual)

Voltage Adjust Range (Remote)

RCP-2000-12

10.5 ~ 14V

90 ~ 110% of nominal output voltage

RCP-2000-24

21 ~ 28V

RCP-2000-48

42 ~ 56V

A remote control unit is available for the RCP-2000 series power supplies under part number RKP-CMU1.

MEAN WELL RKP-CMU

This allows you to monitor the output voltage of the power supplies, the current draw and temperature level. Alarm signals can be set to warn of a power supply operating outside of expected parameters, giving an early indication that something could be wrong.

Since this article was originally published, MEAN WELL has added a further series to the range. This is the new 'digitalised' DRP-3200.

MEAN WELL DRP-3200

This new power supply has a nominal power output of 3200 Watts and includes PMBus communications support. CANBus support is also available as an optional extra.

Of course one thing that is vitally important in data centres is reliability and MEAN WELL doesn’t disappoint here either.

MEAN WELL was established in 1982 by Mr Jerry Lim, who still heads up the company today. In 1986 MEAN WELL started to produce a range of standard switch mode power supplies. The core philosophy of the company is to design and manufacture power supplies, which are highly reliable and very affordable.

All of MEAN WELL’s rack mount power supplies are backed by a 5 year warranty.
