Measuring Indoor Air Quality

MEASURING INDOOR AIR QUALITY
27 January 2023

Indoor air quality (IAQ) can be affected by gases (including carbon monoxide, radon, volatile organic compounds), particulates, microbial contaminants (mould, bacteria), or any mass or energy stressor that can induce adverse health conditions.

Typical IAQ measurements include relative humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide, PM 2.5, atmospheric pressure, the presence of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) plus many more variables.

If one or more of these variables are outside the recommended range, an overall air quality score can be calculated that indicates there is a problem with the quality of the indoor air.

Problems with air quality often go unnoticed which leads to poor health for the people in the area, reduced performance and could exasperate other health problems.

ADM stocks instruments for the measurement of some of these factors, so that the air quality in an indoor environment can be evaluated and if required, changes can be made to improve the air quality in the environment.

INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING INDOOR AIR QUALITY

LUTRON PM-1064SD

LUTRON PM-1064SD AIR QUALITY METER
Lutron PM-1064SD

The PM-1064SD is a cost-effective air quality meter, with built-in SD card data logger.  It allows you to determine with certainty if there are any air quality issues to be addressed within your building.

Readings are taken with a moderate level of accuracy. The unit calculates a health index of 1-9 and can give an alarm if a measurement indicates there are problems with air quality.

The data is saved in a format that can be loaded directly into a spreadsheet for analysis. Some basic Windows based software is also available, which allows you to review and display the data graph form.

Product specifications:

  • PM2.5: 0 to 250 micrograms per cubic meter at +/10 %
  • Humidity: 5 to 95% RH +/-3% RH to 70%
  • Temperature: 0 to 50C, +/-0.8 C
  • CO2: 0 to 10K ppm, +/-50ppm +3% of reading to 3000ppm
  • Barometric pressure: 10 to 110 hPa, +/-2hPa
  • Logging interval: 2 sec to 3600 sec, and manual by push button to 99 sets
  • Batteries: 6x AA or optional 9V battery pack for longer term logging.
