Bespoke Solution to Assess the Temperature of Drilled Blast Holes in Mining
Mining environments have critical temperature requirements to ensure workers’ safety. ADM recently supported a mining customer to assess the temperature at multiple equally spaced locations down a newly drilled blast hole safely, accurately and quickly with a custom-made solution.

Multi-thermocouple Cable and Meter for Mining and Agricultural Applications
In this project, our customer required four units of single cable with 12 equally interspaced thermocouples. The thermocouples were connected to a meter that displayed all temperatures simultaneously.
ADM and a local partner supplier – Industrial Thermocouple Supplies – evaluated available solutions and designed a product using a 12-pair Teflon cable to integrate Type K thermocouples along its length, each neatly terminated and encased in a heat shrink. This cable was then connected to a Lutron BTM-4208SD 12-channel temperature recorder to display all the temperatures in real time.

To protect the exposed thermocouples from the surrounding environment, ADM designed, and 3D printed a nylon cage to not only protect the thermocouples but also allow air to flow within the cage. ADM also designed and 3D printed an adapter to integrate all individual thermocouple connectors into the meter connected by a single plug.
This custom-made solution has proven to be extremely reliable and efficient in the field that our customer has requested two more systems for their other mines. The solutions would also be ideally suited for measuring temperature in grain silos in an agricultural setting.
