Pancake Load Cell for Hazardous Environments: Curiotec CLS Series
Fuel transfer, storage and blending operations rely on accurate weighing to manage inventory, batching and dosing. An inherent risk of these products is their propensity to release vapours during transfer, filling and venting, creating hazardous conditions for explosions or fire.
For systems operating in these conditions, the technology ecosystem requires an understanding of ATEX and IECEx certifications to ensure designs do not lend themselves to overheating or sparking, which could cause combustion in these environments. This can include glands, cables, instruments, junction boxes, and, in this instance, load cells.

The Curiotec CLS series is a pancake load cell designed for the rigour and sensitivity of hazardous environments, with a hazardous area variation featuring an Ex nA IIB-T4 ATEX and IECEx rating. This rating is ideal for Zone 0 and Zone 1 gas/vapour atmospheres, featuring non-sparking protection and limiting surface temperature to 135°C.
The CLS range of load cells features a high degree of weatherproofing with an IP67 ingress protection rating, preventing moisture and dust from penetrating the housing.
The CLS series is designed to cover weight applications from 0.5tf up to 30tf, ideal for tolerating the movement and force applied from supporting tank, vessel and process-skid weighing applications. Depending on the selected model, repeatability ranges from 0.01% toto 0.1%; users can confirm applicable specifications in the Curiotec datasheet on the CLS product page here.
Users should be aware that although the Curiotec CLS does feature design capabilities fit for hazardous environments, all elements of a system must meet the criteria to prevent potential sparks or ignition. This can include connectors, cords, glands, and more across the ecosystem.
