Vaisala: Monitoring Sulfuric Acid Concentration at Scale
Boliden is a global producer of sulfuric acid, producing upwards of 1.7 million tonnes annually across four industrial sites in Sweden, Finland, and Norway. For many of their customers, commercial-scale applications require sulfuric acid concentrations to range between 93% and 98%. In doing so, diluting the sulfuric acid can change the composition enough to enable easier storage and transportation capabilities during cold winter months.
Boliden dilutes pure sulfuric acid with water to achieve these specifications and had originally leveraged density meters to determine the concentration, but in doing so had hit a roadblock with higher concentrations above 94%. Boliden pivoted towards Vaisala’s in-line process refractometer range, requiring a method of constant monitoring that could tolerate the harsh exposure of sulfuric acid. Designed to meet these harsh conditions, Vaisala process refractometers can accurately monitor sulfuric acid concentrations from 85% to 100%.
The Vaisala Polaris range features chemical-resistant models, the PR53GC/GP and GCEX/GPEX process refractometers, designed for the rigours of harsh chemicals and explosive environments. The PR’s are suitable for a range of chemicals, including sugar, hydrocarbons and solvents, alcohols, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid and many more acid and alkaline solutions.
